I get inspired by other creative people. Musicians, actors, costume designers, comedians, directors; personalitieas that are like beacons of light, leading me to the world of clever wit, thoughtful content and waves of unbridled expression.
This piece is called "Vicki". I chose this dress because I just love the brass ring detail at the strap line, the wash and go ease of late 1960's polyester fame and had to match it with a white patent leather purse. It is inspired by Vicki Farrell who is the costume designer for Amy Sedaris' hilarious show "At Home with Amy Sedaris". I don't know Vicki, but I do know her work, she does the designs for most if not all of the characters on the show and Cole Escola's character Chassie Tucker is a favorite of mine. That purse if a Chassie must. It is key to the character and I just love it. |
This piece is called Rosalind. I painted it with 1960's girl groups in mind. I painted this during the COVID pandemic and simulatneous protests surrounding the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, sadly, just to name a few...Rosalind Ashford-Holmes is the name of one of the Original Vandellas of Martha and the Vandellas. I imagined them performing at a supper club. They were on fire that night, so hot! Afterwards, even though they may have been allowed to eat in the kitchen of the club, they preferred to go to their local diner where they could laugh and share stories as they had so many times before. The rings on the right top corner would have been rings left by coffee cups on the table. The pink and black refer to the typical color scheme of many diners at the time, but it speaks to the colors of race as well, they ran with both crowds.

This piece is called "Whitney". It is named after Whitney Blake who played Dorothy Baxter on the 1960's sitcom Hazel. It is not inspired by her character, it is inspired by who I think she may have been in real life. She had three children and worked, a lot. She was not only an actor but also a director and a producer. This dress looks so beautiful and elegant, as I percieve her to have been but splashed with mac and cheese sauce and strawberry ice cream, she had gotten her monthly bill that morning and the dress is gathered at the side to indicate that she just pulled up the hem and kept on going. Her arms have become utensils because they were always working. The pearls are to show that throughout it all, she was always learning and always appeared put together.

iThis piece is called "Amy". It is inpspired by the lovely and talented Amy Sedaris. For many years this woman has made me laugh and think and then laugh again. She is clever, outgoing and is unabashedly herself. It is such a great gift and I'm so thrilled she shares her brand of hilarity with us. The dress is rickrack emblished and the full ruffled skirt just looks like something she would wear, either on her show or in her daily life to see what kind of reastion she would get. The purse is very special. It is avintage wooden box purse that looks like a recipe card box with ties in with her show "At Home with Amy Sedaris", when I spotted it, I just knew she needed it.
